The theatre is alive!!! I am so excited to see the theatre scene around me slowly return to some semblance of normalcy with Maryland’s exceptional vaccination rate!

If you’ve never seen me post here before, or if you’ve happened across my website by some random happenstance, welcome! This is where I share meaningless updates on my life and, more importantly, my art! And theatrical art around the area! It is my wholehearted goal to help build an growing and thriving artistic community in the Washington, Frederick, Jefferson and Loudoun County areas of Maryland, West Virginia and Virginia based on a compassionate form of storytelling. Particularly, I’ve been focusing on working with many different theatrical groups in said areas, mostly in the realms of design and technologies, all the while building a new theatrical and storytelling group in the theatrical vacuum of Washington County, Maryland.
It’s all very fun! And, as COVID restrictions dissipate and more and more people vaccinate, I have SO MUCH news to share on my position in the artistic communities of these areas! So! I’ll go a group at a time! To start, some of the biggest news:
Maryland Ensemble Theatre:
So! Some of the most significant change to my life; I have started a full time position at Maryland Ensemble Theatre in Frederick, Maryland! The official title is master carpenter and electrician (though I know the ‘master’ part of this has come under scrutiny in the broader theatrical world, so that is liable to change I am sure) and mostly consists of caretaking the technical aspects of the theatrical spaces operated by and the shows produced by MET.

I started early in June with their production of Midsummer: A Most Rare Vision at Thorpewood near Thurmont, Maryland. The show is over now, but can be read about here: http://www.theatrebloom.com/2021/06/midsummer-a-most-rare-vision-at-maryland-ensemble-theatre/ It was a fantastic time and an extremely creative show and process that had me VERY excited to continue working with MET!
Then, I got the opportunity to run their season preview! It was a lovely event and a great look forward to what I’d be doing for the upcoming season! There are lots of fun shows with MET on the horizon and more can be read about them here: https://marylandensemble.org/mainstage24/ and https://marylandensemble.org/2021-2022-fun-company-season/
I’m so excited to share about upcoming MET shows as they happen!
Next…
Red Hill Theatre Group:
A group of mine and my friends’ own creation! We started off in January 2020 off the back of the production of my own If Only; Last Words, which may be read under the “plays” tab on this very site! Then, unfortunately, COVID cut us short! But, through the isolation we stewed and toiled away at future plans. Those plans are now, finally, coming to fruition! So, first!
FAT UNICORN CAKE! I initially worked on this show as a theatrical production during my time in Galway. It was written by my dear friend Remee Cunningham and produced for a one act festival through NUIG’s DramSOC and can be viewed here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-ZMfXPCaUE4

It was so fun at the time and, upon the birth of Red Hill, I shared the script with the ensemble and they loved it! Since COVID was an issue, we decided to produce it as a short film and, after nearly a year of production, the final product will be released this August with an initial premier at the Black Box Youth Playhouse, date to be announced!
Watch this space. redhilltheatregroup.org and the Red Hill facebook, found here: https://www.facebook.com/redhilltheatregroup for updates, trailers and other FUC content!
Also, Red Hill officially has dates booked in late October for our inaugural SPOOKY HALLOWEEN SHOW! This year, I’m looking to direct a new play of mine that I’m currently in the process of writing. We are going up again at the Black Box Youth Playhouse in Shepherdstown, West Virginia, and I would love to be able to take it to a couple other stages if possible! Look here and all Red Hill links for updates on that (probably coming in August) and I so so so look forward to this being a yearly tradition! Many of us at Red Hill absolutely love Halloween time and producing new spooky works is a dream come true!
Now, onward…
Authentic Community Theatre:
This season I am continuing my relationship with Hagerstown’s Authentic Community Theatre, building and painting sets for a number of their productions! ACT has a lot exciting going on right now so hold on to your hats!
First, ACT is opening their brand new Black Box in downtown Hagerstown! This Saturday, in fact, is the grand opening! Info for that can be found here: https://www.facebook.com/events/481259602959700/?acontext=%7B%22ref%22%3A%2252%22%2C%22action_history%22%3A%22%5B%7B%5C%22surface%5C%22%3A%5C%22share_link%5C%22%2C%5C%22mechanism%5C%22%3A%5C%22share_link%5C%22%2C%5C%22extra_data%5C%22%3A%7B%5C%22invite_link_id%5C%22%3A500208561326971%7D%7D%5D%22%7D (big link!!)
I am so excited to see this new space and what they do with it! Hagerstown has desperately needed a diversification of their performance arts scene downtown and I think ACT’s Black Box will be just the catalyst to help that change!

In terms of my own involvement, immediately coming up is ACT’s production of Heathers at the Maryland Theatre! I have been working on this set all summer now and I am so excited to see the show go up! Heathers is a great time and I really love seeing something so unique come to the Maryland Theatre stage! Tickets and info for Heathers, as well as the rest of ACT’s season hosted at the Maryland Theatre can be found here: https://www.themarylandtheatre.com/act?fbclid=IwAR1LubXHu_7vw_e_Ka46yJXBdpjAFH2dG_vB_PjTB6_-BH1nOzEyDfI4XXk
Other ACT shows I’ll be working on coming up include, but are not limited to: Sweeny Todd and RENT.
ELSEWISE:
There is so much else I’m doing right now that it is hard to keep track, but I will always continue my relationship with the following groups/companies:
-The Black Box Youth Playhouse in Shepherdstown, WV (https://www.blackboxyouth.org/) who kindly hosts Red Hill’s endeavours and produces quality youth productions year round!
-Boonsboro High School Drama (https://www.facebook.com/Boonsboro-High-School-Drama-236125709758308), my high school drama program run by Michael J Bair; they also produce quality and unique shows, run mostly by the students themselves. They are currently in the midst of a renovation of their auditorium but I cannot wait to see what they come up with when it is finished!
-Audio Video Group (https://audiovideogroup.com/) and Parlights Inc. (parlights.com) are both phenomenal companies doing work for theatres around the areas (as well as churches, events and other spaces that need lights, sound and video). They both are lovely to work with and throw me jobs from time to time, helping me keep up my artistic lifestyle, and for that I am insanely grateful!
ANYHOW! That’s what’s going on! Full time theatre and a lot of fun shows coming up! I can’t wait to see everyone at all of them!!!
BEST WISHES!!!
Cody!

Hey all; greetings from Galway! This is the first of what I hope to be monthly (or more frequent? Maybe??) updates put up on this site. I’m looking to share shows I’m working on, shows I’ve seen, and other projects and events going on. I don’t imagine a terrible amount of people will be looking at it, but it’s a good way to share my thoughts either way, I think!
